How to Say 'Terima Kasih' Casually in Indonesian

You learned terima kasih on day one. Gold star. But here's the thing.. almost nobody uses it in daily conversation 🙈

It's not wrong. It's just.. formal. Like saying "I express my gratitude" every time someone passes you the salt.

What people actually say

Makasih. That's it. That's the one.

Makasih is just terima kasih with the terima chopped off. Shorter. Lighter. Used constantly. At the warung. In the Grab. Texting your friend. It covers like 90% of situations.

Want it even more natural? Add ya.

Makasih ya. (Thanks!)

The ya softens everything. It's warm. Friendly. This is the default thank-you for most Indonesians in most situations.

Need more emphasis? Go with makasih banyak (thanks a lot). Still casual, but it says "I really mean it."

The English infiltration

Yes, Indonesians say "thanks." Just.. the English word. Straight up.

Younger people especially. Urban. Online. You'll hear it in Jakarta coffee shops, in Instagram DMs, in work chats. Totally normal. Not weird. Not pretentious. Just how people talk now.

Internet slang territory

Then there's the playful stuff.

Tengkyu - a phonetic Indonesianification of "thank you." You'll see it in texts and social media. It's cute. It's fun. You wouldn't use it with your boss.

Makaci - makasih but make it adorable. The sh becomes ci. Very internet. Very Gen Z. Your Indonesian teacher would probably wince 😬

So when do you actually use "terima kasih"?

Speeches. Formal emails. Talking to someone much older or higher-ranking. Government offices. That's about it.

Think of it this way:

SituationWhat to say
Grab driver drops you offMakasih ya, bang
Friend pays for coffeeMakasih! or just Thanks
Instagram commentTengkyuuu
Work email to clientTerima kasih
Wedding speechTerima kasih banyak

The real rule

Match the energy. If someone's being casual with you, be casual back. If they say makasih, you say sama-sama (you're welcome) or just yoi (yeah/sure) if you're feeling cool about it.

The textbook version isn't wrong. It's just not the whole picture 🤯

So what's your go-to? Are you a makasih ya person or still holding onto terima kasih banyak?
