How to Say 'Membaca' in Casual Indonesian (Baca)

So you learned that "to read" in Indonesian is membaca. That's correct. Textbook correct.

But nobody actually says that in conversation.

In casual Indonesian, you just say baca. Drop the mem- prefix. Done. That's literally it.

Why It Works

Indonesian has this pattern where formal verbs carry a prefix.. me-, mem-, men-, meng-. In everyday speech, people just chop it off. No one will be confused. No one will judge you. It's completely normal.

Membaca becomes baca. Simple.

Examples You'll Hear Everywhere

"Lagi baca apa?" = What are you reading?

Super common opener. Someone sees you with a book or staring at your phone.. this is what they'll ask.

"Udah baca?" = Have you read it?

You'll hear this one a lot at work or school. Someone shared a document, an article, a message.. udah baca?

"Baca dulu." = Read it first.

Before you ask questions. Before you comment. Just.. baca dulu. 😅

"Bacain dong." = Read it to me / Read it out loud.

This one's fun. The -in suffix adds a "do it for me" flavor. Baca + -in = bacain.

"Baca chat gue!" = Read my message!

Texting context. Someone's ignoring your texts. You're annoyed. Baca chat gue! Very real. Very common.

Bonus Pattern

This prefix-dropping thing isn't unique to membaca. Look at menulis (to write). In casual speech? Just nulis. Reading and writing.. probably the two simplest prefix drops you'll encounter in Indonesian.

Once you see this pattern, you start seeing it everywhere.
