How to Say 'Sedang' in Casual Indonesian (Just Say 'Lagi')
Your textbook taught you sedang. Time to forget it.
Okay not completely. But if you're using sedang in everyday conversation.. you sound like a newsreader. Nobody talks like that. It's like saying "I am currently consuming food" instead of "I'm eating right now."
The word you actually want is lagi.
Lagi = right now, in the middle of
Lagi is how Indonesians express present continuous tense in real life. The pattern is dead simple.
Lagi + verb.
That's it.
Compare these two:
Saya sedang makan. (I am currently eating.) Textbook. Stiff. Nobody says this.
Gue lagi makan. (I'm eating right now.) Natural. Real. This is what people actually say.
Notice saya became gue too. Because if you're going casual, go all the way.
"Lagi apa?" and "Lagi ngapain?"
These two phrases are everywhere. You'll hear them constantly.
Lagi apa? = What are you doing? Lagi ngapain? = What are you doing? (even more casual)
They're the Indonesian equivalent of "whatcha up to?" Perfect for texting. Perfect for starting a conversation. You'll see lagi ngapain in every Indonesian group chat, guaranteed.
Some more examples:
- Gue lagi belajar. (I'm studying right now.)
- Dia lagi tidur. (She's sleeping.)
- Kita lagi nunggu. (We're waiting.)
See the pattern? Always lagi before the verb. Always natural.
Plot twist: lagi also means "again"
Yeah. Same word, different meaning depending on context.
Lagi? (Again?) Jangan lagi. (Don't do it again.) Mau lagi? (Want more? / Want to do it again?)
You'll figure out which meaning from context. It's usually pretty obvious.
The short version
Sedang is for writing. For news. For formal speeches. For your Indonesian exam.
Lagi is for living. For talking. For texting your friends at 2am asking lagi ngapain.
One word. Tiny. Versatile. Probably the most useful casual Indonesian word you'll learn this week.
So.. what are you lagi learning next? 🤙
