How to Say 'Dapat' in Casual Indonesian (Bisa)

So you learned that dapat means "can" or "able to" in Indonesian. That's correct.. technically. But if you walk around Jakarta saying dapat every time you mean "can," people will think you're reading from a government document.

The real word you want is bisa.

Dapat vs Bisa: The Short Version

Dapat is formal. It shows up in textbooks, official speeches, and written documents. Think of it as the Indonesian equivalent of "one is able to" in English. Stiff. Correct. Nobody uses it in conversation.

Bisa is what actual humans say. It's the go-to word for ability, possibility, and permission in daily Indonesian speech. You'll hear it dozens of times a day.
