How to Say 'Anda' in Casual Indonesian (Kamu, Lo, Lu)

So you learned "anda" means "you" in Indonesian. Technically true. But if you say it to a friend.. they're gonna look at you funny 😬

"Anda" is formal. Really formal. Think ads on TV. Government letters. A speech to 500 people. It's the "Sir/Madam" of pronouns. Nobody talks like that in real life.

So what do you actually say?

Kamu: Your Safe Pick

Kamu is the casual "you." It works almost everywhere. Talking to a friend. A classmate. Someone your age. Your go-to.

Kamu mau makan apa? (What do you want to eat?)

Kamu dari mana? (Where are you from?)

Simple. Clean. Understood across all of Indonesia.

One small thing though. "Kamu" carries a slight warmth to it. A closeness. Some Indonesians avoid it with people they've just met or acquaintances they're not tight with. It's not a big deal for learners. But worth knowing.

Lo / Lu: Jakarta Mode 🤯

Now we're getting into slang territory. Lo (sometimes spelled lu) is Jakarta street-level casual. It's paired with gue (I/me). You hear it constantly in Jakarta. In movies. On social media.

Lo udah makan belum? (Have you eaten yet?)

Lu mau ikut gak? (You wanna come along?)

Lo/lu is friends-only. Don't use it with someone older. Don't use it in a meeting. Don't use it with your partner's parents (please 🙈). It's the equivalent of "dude" energy applied to the word "you."

If you're not in Jakarta or not sure.. just stick with kamu.

The Secret Option: Skip "You" Entirely

Here's something textbooks won't tell you. Indonesians dodge direct pronouns all the time. They just use your name instead.

Instead of:

Kamu mau minum apa?

They'll say:

Andre mau minum apa? (Andre, what do you want to drink?)

Even mid-conversation. Even if you're the only person there. It sounds weird in English but it's completely natural in Indonesian. Actually, it's preferred in a lot of situations. Especially with people you're not super close with.

Names sidestep the whole formality question. No need to pick between anda, kamu, or lo. Just say their name.
